Tips to make your New Year’s Resolution Goals Successful

Happy New Years and Welcome to 2020!  As the new decade begins, this is a perfect time to get started on your New Year’s resolutions.  In this article, you will get tips to make your New Year’s Resolution Goals successful.

According to US News, 80% of New Year’s resolution goals fail. Even more alarmingly, the article states that most people fail nearly at the start (by the 2nd week of February).

In order to combat this, I’m taking a business-centric structured approach for 2020. The basis of this approach is combining lessons learned from my MBA and through work. Thus, I believe that this should greatly increase the chance for success.

Foundation for Goals

Create goals that have a purpose and are realistic for you. This should help you weed out the weak short-lived goals. Here are the foundational elements of my goals:

  • Betterment – Should result in a positive outcome for me, my family or others
  • Measurable & Time-bound – Concrete goals that can be monitored and tracked
  • Accountability – Set goals that I can directly impact and be responsible for

Makes your Goals Successful

In the past, I have definitely contributed to the 80% Failure Rate.  Nearly every year I have the same goal of losing weight. Without setting an actual target or timeframe, I never accomplish this goal.  Another threat is just not starting at all – procrastination is bad!

Here are tips to make your goals successful:

  • Write down your New Year’s Resolution Goals – This will make it black and white and set in stone
  • Set up periodic reminders – For me, this will be a weekly reminder on my Outlook calendar
  • Share your Goals – Since many of my goals involve my family and others, the more support the better.
  • Open the pocket book – Some goals may have costs associated to them. Now is not a time to pinch your pennies. You do not want to put up barriers or give yourself additional reasons to quit.
  • Get Going Now – Don’t procrastinate and start now!  Use the New Year as a motivator as there is no better time to get moving.
  • Use Technology as an aid – This is ironic for me as a few of my goals relate to cutting down on use of technology.  However, technology can also be your friend.
